Programme Details

:

Arrive at a cozy textile studio in the northern reaches of Kyoto City.

Meet the artisans, a couple who work together to create intricate tsujigahana textiles. This is a historic form of tie-dyeing using stitching as well as tying to produce intricate patterns that appear at first to be hand painted. Celebrated by the highest levels of Japanese society in the 16th century, this style was highly sought after and used in kimonos for shoguns and samurai.

See the workshop of the dyeing master and discover the spellbinding process of sketching, stitching and dyeing. Under the guidance of an artisan, unwrap a dyed cloth, a lengthy, fascinating process that reveals designs piece by piece, particularly intriguing for anyone interested in artistry. After untying the cloth, guests may take it home as a souvenir.

A small gallery nearby both displays the studio’s creative output and is a shop for purchasing stoles, garments and textiles.

For guests who wish to order a kimono, fully customized kimonos are available and can be shipped overseas.

(This activity is also available with the addition of a tea ceremony. Guests will have a chance to wear original dyed kimonos and participate in a traditional tea ceremony held by one of the artisans. Please ask a Travel Consultant for more information.)
