:

Meet a local guide at hotel lobby and depart by hired car.

Arrive at Dewa Sanzan, a spiritual haven made up of three holy mountain peaks.  This is one of Japan’s most sacred centers of Shugendo, a rare form of ascetic mountain worship that exists outside of the more well-known realms of Japanese Buddhism and Shintoism.

Meet an authentic Yamabushi priest and delve into the rich history and culture of this extraordinary area. Led by the priest with the guide as a translator, experience the sacred stone stairway pilgrimage, a path that weaves through the tranquil beauty of Mount Haguro. Along the way, you’ll encounter an iconic Five-Story Pagoda, designated as a National Treasure. Surrounded by ancient cedar trees lining the 2,446 stone steps, the path exudes a sacred atmosphere that has earned it three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

To complement this spiritual journey, enjoy a traditional shojin ryori lunch, a refined vegetarian Buddhist cuisine that reflects the ascetic practices of Shugendo monks.

Note: The hike along the stone stairway takes approximately 1.5 hours, so comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear such as sneakers or trekking shoes are suggested.

After the experience, part ways with the hosts and return to the hotel by car.
