Discover a Tokyo district away from the tourist crowds, rich in history and tradition. Sumida Ward is mainly famous for sumo wrestling, with the national stadium and the several sumo stables in the area. It’s also the birthplace of the ukiyo-e artist Hokusai and remains a thriving art scene where guests will make their own traditional artwork. Explore this vibrant district and discover its dual heritage of sport and art with a private guide.
Meet the guide at Ryogoku Station to start the exploration of the sumo district. Walk to visit some sumo-related locations like the stadium’s museum and the local shrine were wrestler pray before matches. (Itinerary may be adjusted based on tournament schedule)
Make a stop at the tranquil Former Yasuda Garden, a small but lovely garden with stone lanterns and koi fish.
Continue to the Sumida Hokusai Museum to learn about ukiyo-e woodblock printing and the life of the famous artist Hokusai who made this district this home. In addition to the permanent gallery, various temporary exhibitions are held during the year that beautifully illustrate the life and work of this eccentric genius.
Move by taxi to Atelier Sougeikan, the workshop of one of the many artisans operating in this district. The small traditional shop is a highly photogenic spot, with countless paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Listen to charming explanations from the artist and then paint a custom paper lantern using the traditional method of brush and ink.
Once the masterpiece is completed, fold it into a flat box to bring home safely. Bid farewell to the guide and continue exploring Tokyo independently.
