Experience the legacy of Date Masamune, the samurai who built the foundation of Sendai, one of Japan’s most important northern cities. Walk through the modern streets with a knowledgeable private guide, stopping along the way at numerous local specialty shops. There is plenty to see, taste, and enjoy in this in-depth tour focusing on food and history.
Meet a private guide at the hotel at 9:40 and head out on today’s Sendai City tour.
Begin with a visit to Date no Komichi, a local shopping area attached to Sendai Station to sample some northern Japanese sake. It’s a great way to start the day!
Move on to the Sendai Morning Market. Despite its name, this market is open until 6 pm and is always buzzing with local shoppers and restaurant owners searching for the freshest local produce. Enjoy snacking through the market with stops for green tea, fishcakes, crispy croquettes, and sweets at a retro candy shop.
Proceed to Mitaki Fudoson, a colourful local temple hidden within the busy shopping arcade. Hear the story of Sendai Shiro, a local lucky god that brings prosperity.
After a light lunch, take a short taxi ride to the beautiful Zuihouden, the elaborate mausoleum of Date Masamune. This fanciful structure is painted in vibrant colourful designs and adorned with stunning gold leaf.
The last spot of the day is the ruined foundation of Aoba Castle, once the most expansive castle in Japan. From here, the Masamune clan dominated the north, and a pleasant view of city can be enjoyed from atop the hill today.
Return to the hotel by taxi and/or train, and part ways with the guide upon arrival.
