Embark on a unique journey into traditional samurai techniques with a tour from Tsuruoka to Murayama, the birthplace of iaido. This revered martial art focuses on how to draw a sword quickly to respond to attacks, and a hands on training with experts in a dojo is the focus of this experience. Afterward, savor a delicious lunch of rustic soba noodles in a traditional restaurant.
Meet today’s guide at hotel lobby and depart out via taxi to the first location.
Today’s martial art activity will take place at Iai Jinja Shrine, the historic birthplace of iaido, the art of drawing and wielding a Japanese sword.
Upon arrival in the dojo, don traditional training attire and participate in a hands-on, two hour training. Under the tutelage of an expert, learn the history of the art of drawing the sword and see a demonstration of techniques. Then, step up to practice the basics of iaido using real training equipment.
After this invigorating activity, enjoy a delicious lunch at a charming local restaurant along the town’s famous Soba Street. The region is known for its soba buckwheat noodles, a traditional dish that perfectly compliments today’s cultural activity.
The day concludes with ride back to the hotel in Tsuruoka.
