Tokyo is an exciting capital city known for its bright neon lights and buzzing energy and at the heart of it all, the fascinating and unique Japanese culture can be discovered. Today’s tour will give an insightful rundown of Japan’s history and culture through a smattering of modern and traditional sightseeing spots.
Meet up with the guide this morning at the hotel for the trip to Hie Shrine for an introduction to the Japanese religion of Shinto. What makes this shrine such a unique sightseeing spot is its stylish blend with the neighbouring sleek high-rise office towers, whilst offering tranquility away from the hustle and bustle.
Continue with a visit to Zojoji, an impressive Buddhist temple standing next to the iconic Tokyo Tower. Like the Hie Shrine, this is a spot with great historical significance where long established customs are still practiced in the modern day.
The tour will also include a stop at Hamarikyu Garden, a traditional landscape made to look like the natural scenery of the country through techniques cultivated over centuries.
Enjoy lunch in a traditional setting before travelling deeper into the local district of Nezu, the perfect spot for shops, art galleries and cafes. Weave through the small alleys stopping by artisan venues and coffee houses either straight from the Taisho era or those with a hip modern feel.
The next stop will be the Yanaka Cemetery area, where an old sento-style bathhouse turned into a contemporary art gallery can be discovered among the hidden temples.
From the cemetery, finish the tour in Yanaka Ginza, a Showa era shopping street with plenty of delicious food samples to try as appetizers before dinner. (L)
