Today, meet a private guide and leave the big city behind on a train to Kawagoe, a small town that reflects the Edo Era (1603-1867) through its collection of historic old warehouses found along the charming Kurazukuri Street.

Start the tour from the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, popular for bringing good fortune in love and for its photogenic points. This ancient Shinto shrine with around 1500 years of history offers various purification activities to seek the benevolence and protection of the gods and good luck. Walk under the ema corridor, a tunnel of wooden plaques with wishes, and literally go fishing for the fish-shaped omikuji fortunes.

A pleasant walk will follow to the old preserved warehouse district and the symbol of the town: the wooden bell tower called Toki-no-kane. This area offers also a wide choice of restaurants and street food such as sweet potato snacks, grilled onigiri riceballs, and local craft beers.

After lunch, explore traditional houses such as the Osawa Family Residence, the oldest warehouse in Kawagoe, which was once owned by a prominent cotton and kimono dealer. Other notable spots are the museum where grand festival floats carried by locals are displayed, and a small street called Kashiya-yokocho (“candy alley”) filled with traditional sweets.

Make a stop at the local souvenir shop Tsubaki no Kura, a traditional building converted in a very photogenic shop, then end the day with a visit to Kita-in Temple, famous for its 540 stone statues of the disciples of Buddha.

Head back to the station and return to the city and part ways with the guide.
