Meet the guide at the hotel at 9:00 and depart via public transportation to the start of the hiking trail.

This is where the journey into the world of myth begins. Mt. Fuji is long considered a mystic and sacred symbol of Japan, but the region around the mountain is home to countless other legends. Today’s hike ascends Mt. Kintoki, said to be the origin of Kintaro, the mythical boy known for superhuman strength and something of a Japanese Hercules. See the Shinto shrine that houses Kintaro’s (alleged) axe, and then witness a great boulder that was split in two as proof of the boy’s strength.

The trail then climbs up richly forested slopes, thick with moss-covered trees and stones. The hike is approximately 5 km with an elevation variance of 1,000 m. While not a difficult or technical hike, there are steep sections that require appropriate outdoor shoes.

Awaiting at the 1,213 m summit are stunning views of Mt Fuji, Lake Ashi, and the volcanic vents of Owakudani Valley. Stop for lunch at the rest houses atop the mountain before descending back to start of the trail.
