Today’s tour begins at 9:00. Meet a local guide at the Haebaru Town Museum for a journey into the not-so-distant past of Okinawa, when World War 2 raged in the Pacific and the lives of local residents were changed forever.

Begin with a walk down a path that was once used by young students to carry meals to wounded soldiers. Now overgrown with jungle trees, this road was surrounded by only low grass during the war, putting the children at great risk of aircraft attacks as they carried their precious bundles of food.

Move on to a bunker complex that was used as a field hospital. Many of the underground tunnels and hospital facilities are still intact and provide an excellent glimpse into the past. This is where doctors and students worked to save the lives of wounded soldiers and locals.

Finish with a taste of wartime cooking. Rations were sparse during the conflict, but today’s lunch is a hearty meal based on simple cooking methods developed during and after the war. The secret to sustenance on the islands has always been healthy local vegetables, and today guests can try some of this unique home cooked food in a local restaurant.

As the tour ends, part ways with the guide and continue exploring the island independently.
