Hiroshima is famous for its tragic destruction and rebirth, but there is a more lighthearted side to the city as well. Explore the natural beauty that surrounds Hiroshima, with attractive hiking paths waiting in the foothills. Join a guide for this enjoyable hike up Mt. Futaba, where amazing views of the city can be found. At the peak, stop for an optional forest meditation session followed by a delightful matcha tea ceremony.
Today’s walk will begin at 10:00. Meet the guide outside of Hiroshima Station and depart on a short walk to the foot of Mt. Futaba, a 140m peak overlooking the city.
Begin by stepping back 400 years to the Edo Period, and discover the secrets of the Toshogu Shrine. More than just your average Shinto shrine, there are plenty of details here for the guide to point out. Learn how the modern and historic came crashing together here when the bomb fell, and how the shrine still plays a vital role in the community.
Start the ascent up the mountain, passing by a number of small shrines housing various gods. The path is mostly steps, so be prepared for a short but vigorous workout.
At the peak, see the view of the city from the magnificent white Peace Pagoda that marks a spiritual spot where those who perished in the bombing are remembered.
Walk deeper into the forest for a short optional forest meditation, where guests are guided on how to use their five senses to appreciate and feel nature. This is the Japanese practice of “forest bathing,” where immersion in nature can produce a wonderfully calming effect.
After this refreshing experience, enjoy a casual tea ceremony at the mountain’s best lookout point. Sipping matcha and tasting local sweets while looking out over the city is sure to be a lasting memory of Hiroshima.
Descend the mountain and return back to the station. Part ways with the guide, and return to the hotel or continue exploring the city independently.
