Hakodate, once a bustling shipbuilding hub, saw the rise of 'mokkiriya' – liquor stores where patrons stand while imbibing. These small, vintage shops accommodated about 10 patrons, offering sake and shochu, along with canned goods, dried delicacies, or peanuts as snacks. A quick post-work drink was the norm, creating a unique after-hours culture in the port town. Explore three authentic locales in Hakodate, soaking up the true essence of local spirits.
