Overview: Experience the slower pace of country life in Gujo Hachiman, where water flows through every corner of town and community traditions run deep. Just a scenic drive from Nagoya, this full-day tour blends history, local crafts, and scenic charm. Explore the legacy of one of Japan’s most beloved summer festival towns with the insight of a local guide.
The journey begins in Nagoya. Meet the guide and set off toward the mountains of Gifu Prefecture.
Embark on a stroll through the beautifully preserved castle town of Gujo Hachiman. The walk leads through town’s canals and preserved streets, where wooden homes line the waterways and carp swim peacefully beneath small bridges. Gujo’s relationship with water is more than scenic – it’s central to daily life, with springs and wells used communally for generations.
After soaking up the scenery, enjoy a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the Gujo Hachiman Hakurankan Museum. This small but lively museum introduces you to the town’s rich history, including its famous summer dance festival, Gujo Odori, which has been celebrated for over 400 years.
Before heading back, take part in a hands-on Tenugui making experience*. Create a traditional dyed hand towel to and bring home as a personal souvenir.
