When it comes to authentic nightlife experiences in Tokyo, Shinjuku is definitely the place to go. From tiny locals-only bars to lively izakaya gastropubs, there’s something for everybody. This tour visits two of the most famous places to enjoy a night out in Shinjuku: the nostalgic Omoide Yokocho restaurant alley with its retro flair, and Golden Gai, a maze of tiny bars that often cannot accommodate more a handful customers.
Tonight’s tour begins at 18:00. Meet a private food guide and begin with a stroll through the nostalgic Omoide Yokocho, or “Memory Lane.” In this narrow alley, one can experience mid-20th century nostalgic vibes and fantastic smells coming from numerous small restaurants. Follow the guide into a popular Izakaya (Japanese pub) just off the main alley to taste some local food and drink, including the district’s famous yakitori chicken and vegetable skewers. Sushi rolls and sea scallop tempura are also often on the seasonal menu.
After this delicious dinner, follow the guide through Kabukicho, the most famous nightlife district in Tokyo. Marvel at the bright neon lights and soak in the intoxicating atmosphere before arriving in the lively Golden Gai neighbourhood.
This tightly packed maze of small streets is known for its unique and flamboyant tiny pubs and karaoke bars. The guide knows all the best watering holes, granting guests entrance to bars that are normally reserved only for regular local customers. Enjoy drinks at two colourful bars before parting ways with the guide.
Continue to explore Kabukicho’s nightlife independently or return to the hotel. (D)
