Osaka may be home to various cultural and historic sites, but the true star of the show in this lively central Japan city is the food. Indeed, the motto that the city’s exuberant inhabitants live by is kuidaore – “to eat oneself bankrupt.”  Famous as a flavourful, delicious destination, Osaka is best enjoyed on an empty stomach and with a desire for culinary adventure. Set out to sample an eclectic mix of food on this filling look at Osaka’s most beloved dishes.

Today’s tour begins at 17:00. Meet a local food guide and head to the first stop. This will be a restaurant serving either tempura or kushi katsu, fried skewers of meat and vegetables. Either way, fried food is a major part of Osakan cuisine and a perfect way to start the evening.

Next, head to a restaurant specialising in wagyu beef dishes. Often referred to as the most expensive beef in the world, wagyu beef is of a superb quality, and is on many a gourmet’s wish list. Enjoy the melt-in-the-mouth textures with a refreshing cocktail.

After walking around the atmospheric backstreets, the final stop will be a small teppanyaki restaurant to try some delicious gyoza and must-eat Osaka-style okonomiyaki pancakes cooked on a metal plate right in front of guests.

Bid farewell to the guide, and either return to the hotel or go for a stroll around the neighbourhood to take in the sights. (D)
