Meet the guide at the hotel and travel by train to Mt. Takao, a natural retreat on the western edge of Tokyo long associated with mountain worship and spiritual practice. Upon arrival, ride the cable car up the forested slopes to the temple grounds, enjoying sweeping views while leaving the city behind.

Following the cedar-lined approach to Takaosan’s Temple, discover a place that has welcomed pilgrims and worshippers for centuries. Here, take part in a traditional Goma fire ceremony, an important Buddhist ritual in which wooden prayer sticks are offered to sacred flames, symbolically burning away worldly attachments and purifying the spirit.

After the ceremony, enjoy a carefully prepared Shojin Ryori lunch, the plant-based cuisine traditionally served in Buddhist temples. Following the meal, enjoy Mt. Takao’s peaceful natural scenery a bit longer before returning to central Tokyo and parting ways with the guide. (L)
