Today’s tour will begin at 09:00. Escape from Tokyo for a full day guided tour of Kamakura, a city rich in history and culture.

Start the Kamakura tour with a visit to Kotoku-in Temple, home to the Daibutsu, the second biggest bronze Buddha statue in Japan. Built in the 13th century, this impressive Buddha image stands 13 metres high. Learn how it was constructed, and also of its fascinating history, having survived through years of typhoons and other natural disasters.

Walk from Kotoku-in to Hase-dera, a temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. Spend time exploring the many wonders of this vast temple, including its intricately decorated staircase, the guardian statues of the temple gates and a small cave believed to have been built by the legendary Japanese Buddhist monk, Kukai. Continue to the main hall to see the impressive wooden statue of Kannon, the eleven-headed goddess of mercy.

Then, board the century-old Enoden railway for a trip to the centre of Kamakura. Get a glimpse into local life while riding on this historic train. After disembarking, walk through the busy streets of Komachi-dori, an area filled with craft shops and food stalls, and stop for a lovely lunch before continuing to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Listen as the guide explains about Hachiman, the patron saint of Kamakura’s founder and the Shinto guide of Japan’s famous samurai warriors.

End the lovely day out with a visit to nearby Engaku-ji Temple, one of five great Zen temples in Kamakura. The guide will explain how Buddhism spread through Japan while Kamakura was the country’s political centre, thus resulting in a proliferation of temples. Admire the main temple building as well as its sub temples and browse the collection of historic artefacts on display.

Having seen the city’s highlights, the Kamakura tour concludes with a journey back to Tokyo.
