Journey through two of Kyushu’s most atmospheric destinations, where peaceful waterways, refined historic residences, and centuries-old shrine traditions reveal the cultural richness of Fukuoka Prefecture. From the canals of Yanagawa to the lively temple streets of Dazaifu, this experience blends history, scenery, and local flavours.
Depart Fukuoka and travel south to Yanagawa, a charming canal town often referred to as the ‘Venice of Kyushu’. Originally developed as part of the town’s castle defenses and irrigation system, the waterways today create one of the region’s most iconic landscapes. Board a traditional river boat and drift slowly through narrow canals lined with willow trees, stone bridges and old merchant buildings, experiencing the relaxed rhythm that has defined Yanagawa for centuries.
Following the canal cruise, continue to Ohana, the former residence of the Tachibana family, powerful feudal lords who governed the area during the Edo period. The estate preserves the refined elegance of aristocratic life, featuring the beautifully landscaped Shoto-en Garden, the stately Grand Hall and the Western-style Seiyo-kan building. The Tachibana Museum further reveals the family’s history and cultural legacy through historical artefacts and exhibitions.
In the afternoon, continue to Dazaifu, one of Kyushu’s most important cultural and spiritual centres. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane – the deity of learning – has welcomed worshippers for over a thousand years. Cross traditional bridges and stroll through peaceful grounds surrounded by seasonal beauty before exploring the lively approach to the shrine, where traditional shops and street food stalls offer local specialties and a nostalgic atmosphere. The blend of sacred heritage, local culture and regional flavours make Dazaifu a fitting conclusion to this journey through Kyushu’s timeless traditions. (L)
