Kintsugi – the art of repairing ceramics with gold-tinted materials – has long offered damaged objects a second chance to shine. Learn about this fascinating technique from an eclectic master: a young dentist and DJ who has perfected his own style of kintsugi that uses modern, food-safe materials. Restore a chipped bowl or plate under the tutelage of this friendly craftsman, gaining a greater appreciation for this deceptively simple craft.
Meet the guide in the hotel lobby and depart on foot to a local event space. Upon arrival, meet the kintsugi master and enjoy a short presentation about his own personal story as he discovered the artform. (The guide will act as an interpreter for the duration of this activity)
After some instruction on what kintsugi is and how it is traditionally done, it’s time to begin the process. Unlike many traditional kintsugi supplies, the materials for today’s lesson have been specially created by the host to be food-safe. Watch as the host demonstrates how to prepare, fill, and file a chipped portion of a ceramic plate or bowl, then take up the tools and try it on your own piece.
A bit of time is required to let the base material dry, so take a break and enjoy conversation with the host over a cup of coffee or tea. He can tell of his apprenticeship in Europe, and how it inspired him to explore restoration techniques on opposite sides of the world. Several restored pieces from his studio will also be available for close up examination.
Once dry, apply a layer of gold paint onto the repaired surface, giving it a final touch of classic kintsugi shine. The master will then box up the piece for guests to safely take home as a handmade souvenir.
Say farewell to the guide and host, and return to the hotel or continue exploring the town independently.
