Meet the guide in the hotel lobby and depart to explore the vibrant city of Hiroshima and the nearby island of Miyajima.

Begin with a visit to the Peace Park, an important reminder of the cataclysmic event that occurred here at the end of World War 2. While the park contains a number of monuments, the highlights are the Peace Memorial Museum and the A-Bomb Dome, the latter of which is a tangible connection to the destruction of the city.

Tour the museum and park before heading to Miyajima Island, which is reached by a combination of train and ferry. This magical destination is sure to lighten the mood after somber reflection in the Peace Park.

Arrive on Miyajima and walk the shopping street to the centuries-old Itsukushima Shrine. This Shinto complex is built atop piers in the bay, and is complemented by a magnificent torii gate that appears to float atop the water. When the tide is out, visitors can walk along the mudflats to the gate itself and stand beneath the towering structure.

During the tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant either in Hiroshima City or on Miyajima Island. Consider trying okonomiyaki, the city’s legendary savoury pancake dish.

Continue exploring Miyajima with a visit to Daisho-in Temple, a highly unique and enjoyable Buddhist temple. There is plenty to marvel at here, including a winding path surrounded by countless statues, a cave filled with lanterns and altars, and a mysterious pitch black basement.

Cross to the mainland by ferry and return by train to Hiroshima City to part ways with the guide.
