Today’s cultural experience is all about a very important part of the indigenous Ainu lifestyle: music.

Meet a local guide and transfer to the workshop of a well-known local musician. He will introduce guests to the tonkori, a unique string instrument that is held upright and plucked with two hands.

The tonkori may initially seem similar to a Japanese koto harp, but the sound it produces is more rustic and rough, evoking the wild lifestyle that the Ainu have traditional lived among nature in the north.

Enjoy a performance of several Ainu songs, then learn the basics of how to play the tonkori. The host carves his own instruments from raw materials, so an explanation of the creation process is given as well.

Guests will finish this experience with a better understanding of Ainu culture through their music and use of natural materials.

Return to town to part ways with the guide, and return to the hotel or continue exploring the town independently.
