Set off this morning with a private guide and air-conditioned car with a driver to explore Yogkyarta’s eclectic art scene. The city is considered the cradle of Javanese culture. For centuries the palaces and craftsmen were engaged in art, and more recently the city has evolved as one among the hotspots in the country for contemporary Indonesian art.

Begin with a visit to the Affandi Museum. Affandi was one of Indonesia’s most eccentric artists, and this trait is well reflected in his old freeform home which hosts, today, a large part of his collection. Witness not only his expressionist strokes on canvas that remind of Gauguin, Kandinsky or Picasso but also see his favourite car, a classic, yellow Mitsubishi Galant GT version in which he uses to cruise the streets of the town.

The next visit is the Sonobudoyo Museum (Note: Museum is closed on Mondays). Founded in 1935 and designed by the Dutch architect Karsten, this museum offers visitors a chance to see Java's rich cultural heritage with the sense of art, including traditional wooden puppets, paintings, masks, textiles and an extensive variety of keris, or indigenous daggers.

Make a stop for lunch at Warung Bu Ageng (Note: Warung Bu Agung is closed on Mondays) run by a well-known local comedian.

This afternoon, continue with a visit to another of Yogyakarta’s galleries (depending on availability and changing expeditions or events). Among the recommended stops are:

- Jogja National Museum (JNM), a cultural hub designed to be a public area dedicated to preserving and advancing visual, performing, and multimedia arts.

- Bale Banjar Sangkring. This stylish gallery features contemporary artworks, such as paintings, sculpture and installations. It is run by a Balinese artist and his Malaysian wife working as art curator.

- Finally the Langgeng Art Foundation, which is another gallery with an adjacent furniture studio and coffee shop.

After your tour through the exhibition space, enjoy a coffee in the patio surrounded by art

Following the art spaces visit, proceed to Natya Lakshita Studio for an introduction to Javanese dance. Be welcomed by the Maestro, Didik Nini Thowok—one of Indonesia’s most famous dance masters, whose creative dances are rooted in tradition. (If he is unavailable, another dancer from the studio will conduct the workshop.) Join a one-hour dance workshop, learning new choreography for classical Javanese dance in a studio adorned with memorabilia from Didik Nini Thowok’s 53-year career. (L)
