Discover Mount Merapi's geological secrets and explore with locals who have lived on its slopes for generations. Witness how its volcanic soil fertilizes the surrounding farmland, and gain insights into how to interpret volcanic signs to prevent disaster.
Start the day with an introduction to the geology underneath Mount Merapi, which erupted last in 2010 leaving several villages severely damaged, with a visit to the Museum Mount Merapi.
In a nearby village today’s host Mr. Yanto, who has spent all his life on the slopes of the active volcano, will lead a relaxed trek through the Turgo hills in the national park, covered by pines, ferns and a variety of tropical plants. The path leads past fruit gardens and small farms. The volcanic ash despite its devastating nature has also its positive effects.
Discover Kaliurang, a charming town nestled at the base of Mt. Merapi. Savor a European-inspired lunch with a local twist at a restaurant that showcases a distinctive fusion of Javanese and Dutch architecture.
This afternoon continued by a semi-convertible four-wheel drive jeep closer towards the lava fields. Here, Sisa Hartaku Mini Museum in Kinahrejo tells the tragic story of local communities that despite being warned of imminent eruptions in 2010 did not leave their villages on time. Molten computer screens, toys and pets that have been burned down to their skeleton strikingly show the dangers and importance of cooperation with the authorities monitoring volcanic activity in the countries along the Pacific Ring – the so-called Ring of Fire.
