Galungan is an important and colourful festival in Bali. It occurs once in the 210 day cycle of the Balinese calendar and marks the time of the year when the spirits of the ancestors are believed to visit the Earth. During this festival, Balinese families will make offerings for the ancestral spirits to express their gratitude.
Join a Balinese family for the day, celebrating the festival in their countryside compound in Marga Village. The importance of the day requires traditional Balinese dress (including visitors) sarongs will be provided in order to blend in with the villagers. Help prepare for the ceremony and learn how to make banten, or an offering. There will be lots of different local foods on preparation and everyone will be busy with the ceremonial proceedings, at times this may look uncoordinated and chaotic.
Enjoy a typical Balinese lunch in the village.
After lunch, take a stroll through the village with a local guide who will offer some in depth insights into the origins and meanings of this important celebration. Witness the ritual performance of the village purification called ngerebeg, in which the people and members of the neighbourhood association display penjor, beautifully decorated bamboo poles in front of their houses, which are offerings to the gods. - During Nyepi Day, a significant religious observance in Bali observed on 19th March 2026, visitors must remain within hotel premises from 6:00 AM until 6:00 AM the following day (a 24-hour period). Both Bali Airport and the harbor will not operate any flights or activities during this time. Hotels will continue to operate with limited staff.
