Programme Details

:

Nestled in a shady tropical garden on the outskirts of Magelang City, Rumah Tenun is a weaving house that offers a relaxing and meaningful immersion into local culture. A visit here showcases the meticulous and passionate work of local artisans in the fine process of weaving.

A warm welcome of local snacks and refreshments introduces the visit,  followed by a brief orientation to the site and its mission. Begin in the garden, where various fibre plants are cultivated. Equipped with simple gear such as a bamboo hat, a fan and mosquito repellent, walk through the grounds as the guide explains the origins of different natural fibres and their traditional uses. Learn how plants are harvested and prepared before entering the next stages of processing.

Continue to the processing and weaving area to observe the transformation from raw fibre to thread and finally to woven fabric. Artisans demonstrate each step of the process, sharing their techniques and experience. A hands-on weaving session provides an opportunity to try the craft using prepared fibres.

The visit concludes with a farm-to-table lunch served in the garden-set restaurant, featuring local dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients. Before departure, browse the main house, where finished products made from Indonesian natural fibres are available for purchase as souvenirs. Return transfer follows. (L)
