Embark on a scenic drive from Malang towards Mount Bromo, arriving in time to watch the sun set across the caldera and surrounding highlands. Along the way, visit centuries-old heritage sites, pause at a dramatic waterfall and enjoy an authentic local meal served in a Tengger village.
Depart Malang and drive towards the foothills of the Tengger highlands, stopping first at Jago Temple, a 13th-century Buddhist sanctuary from the Singhasari kingdom. Walk clockwise around the structure to view the detailed stone reliefs carved into its outer walls, illustrating moral tales and fables in narrative sequence.
Continue to Pelangi Waterfall, which cascades approximately 110 metres down a forested cliff. In favourable light conditions, a rainbow may appear in the mist.
Proceed along the countryside to a Tengger village, where a farm-to-table lunch is served in traditional style.
Afterwards, drive onwards to a panoramic viewpoint on the caldera's southern slopes. From here, see Mount Semeru, Bromo and Batok on the horizon.
Descend into the caldera, passing through the savanna as the sun sets until reaching the ‘sea of sand’. Pause to take in the vast volcanic setting at dusk before continuing to the hotel in the Bromo area. (L)
