Mixing a dose of local interaction with a touch of culture and an easy cycling ride, this Yogyakarta day tour adds up to a fun, unique excursion that is quite different from the normal tour package. Take a leisurely bike ride from the active volcano of Gunung Merapi, through small villages and countryside farms to the temple complex of Prambanan.
Programme Details
Located near Gunung Merapi about one hour’s drive from the city, the village offers magnificent views of this active volcano and the dozens of ravines which have been created by molten streams of lava.
From this stunning village, and with Gunung Merapi as the backdrop, set off by bike on a 15km ride, mostly downhill. Passing through the various villages and countryside, guests will have plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or to chat to the locals. The guide will also explain the various local agricultural landscapes, such as tobacco, rice and snakeskin fruit plantations and explain the processes of growing and harvesting these native crops.
Please note that the route is largely downhill and considered easy to moderate.
After 15km, take lunch in a local restaurant where their hard work is rewarded with a magnificent view of Prambanan – the next stop on the itinerary.
After lunch, be driven to the huge Prambanan complex, a set of temples built in the middle of the 9th century, about 50 years after the construction of Borobudur. Very little is known about the early history of the complex, but it is thought to have been constructed to commemorate the return of a Hindu dynasty to Java. The temples lay in ruins for hundreds of years and it was only in the 1930s that reconstruction started. Most of the temples within the complex have now been restored.
The guide will escort around the temple grounds explaining the history, construction processes and religious significance of these buildings. Following the tour, it will be time to transfer back to the hotel in Yogyakarta. (L)

- Children aged between 2 and 12 years at the time of travel will receive a 20% discount off the Adult Price.
- All language guides other than English subject to availability during high season July-September.
- During the important religious festival of Idul Fitri, which falls on 9th-10th March 2027 significant travel activity is expected across the country, especially within Java. Travelling will be extremely challenging due to heavy traffic, expect significant delays and congestion on roads, trains, and flights. You might find limited-service availability, as some tour guides could be returning home and certain restaurants may be closed. The busiest travel periods will be just before and immediately after the holiday. Given the anticipated severe disruptions, we strongly advise against overland travel from 2nd - 17th March 2027.
