After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, meet with the guide and set off on an exploration tour of Yogyakarta’s rich culture and traditions.

The first stop is Ullen Sentalu Museum, a private collection of the Haryono family. Admire the extensive displays of Javanese cultural items while the guide explains about the island’s rich traditions and heritage.

Continue to the adjacent Beukenhof Restaurant for lunch. Housed in an exquisite Dutch colonial building, the Beukenhof is the perfect place to enjoy a bit of Indonesian heritage while dining on delicious international food.

Then it’s time to explore Java’s ‘living heritage’ with a Yogyakarta cycling tour through the rural countryside. After a short drive to Kaliadem village, hop on a bike and start pedalling through the village and its surroundings. Enjoy views of Gunung Merapi volcano while cycling through farms and fields, stopping to chat with farmers. Learn about the key crops such as tobacco, rice and snake fruit being grown in the area and gain a better understanding of Indonesia’s agrarian culture.

Upon reaching Plaosan village, return to the car for a short drive to Ratu Boko, an enormous ancient archaeological complex. Take a short walk around to admire the incredible buildings then find a quiet spot to sit for sunset viewing. Referred to by the locals as a ‘light show’, the setting sun casts beautiful colours over the complex and its surroundings to create a magical ambiance.

Following this incredible day of culture and nature, return to Yogyakarta for an evening at leisure. (L)
