Discover the art of batik making, a craft so important in Indonesian culture that it has been listed as one of UNESCO’s ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’. Set off on this half day specialist tour from Yogyakarta, leaving at 09:00 or 13:00. (Note: Lunch will be served at a local restaurant either before or after the class.)

Enter a traditional batik factory for an introduction to this famous craft. Take a walk around the facilities, seeing skilled craftsmen using ancient techniques to make these coveted fabrics. Watch as detailed patterns are carefully drawn or stamped in wax and learn about the symbolism of particular designs and colours. See the creation of dyes, made from natural ingredients that are carefully blended and boiled together.

Then start from scratch to create a unique, personalised batik. Under the guidance of a skilled artist, create a new design and apply wax using traditional tools. Help to mix the dye then carefully dip the fabrics to create vibrant coloured clothes with white patterns later revealed from under the wax.

This special, handmade creation will then be left at the workshop and will be delivered to the hotel once the fabric has dried. Say farewell to the local artisans and transfer back to the hotel, armed with a new knowledge and appreciation for Javanese crafts and culture. (L)
