Be immersed in Yogyakarta’s vibrant tapestry of art and dance. Wander through a historic museum, marvelling at shadow puppets and ornate dance masks. Then step into the studio of a renowned Indonesian dancer to explore the expressive art of movement and learn a few traditional steps.
In the morning or around midday, meet the guide and driver and set off by air-conditioned vehicle for an enriching cultural discovery tour of Yogyakarta.
Begin at the Sonobudoyo Museum. Founded in 1935 and designed by renowned Dutch architect Thomas Karsten, this museum contains an impressive collection of Javanese artefacts, including an array of shadow puppets and masks used for rituals and traditional dance performances.
Next, head to Natya Lakshita Studio for an introduction to Javanese dance. Be welcomed by the Maestro, Didik Nini Thowok—one of Indonesia’s most famous dance masters, whose creative dances are rooted in tradition. (If he is unavailable, another dancer from the studio will conduct the workshop.) A short discussion provides insights into the origins of Javanese dance and the celebrated career of Didik Nini Thowok.
Then visit the 'Omah Collection' gallery which displays various types of costumes as well as the Maestro's personal masks collection.
Conclude the visit with a one-hour dance workshop, learning new choreography for classical Javanese dance in a studio adorned with memorabilia from Didik Nini Thowok’s 53-year career.
