This half-day tour delves into the 1,300 year-old tradition of Javanese herbal medicine. Start the day with a visit to the Beringharjo Market, which has been in operation since 1758 and is a hive of local trade and activity. Guests can make their own ‘jamu’ medicine in a shop that has been operating since the 1950s.

This morning set off for Beringharjo Market for the start of this insightful traditional Java medicine tour. Join a local guide for a walk through the market, which is one of Java’s oldest marketplaces. Browse the stalls of fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, learning about their uses in Javanese cuisine and medicine.

Enter a section of the market selling jamu. This traditional herbal tonic has been used for more than 1000 years to cure various ailments. See the collection of bottles and jamu ingredients on sale, which will be used by vendors who wander the streets of Java selling this beloved drink.

After this introduction, it is time for a hands on jamu course. Travel a short distance to a shop that has been producing and selling jamu since the 1950s. Alongside a local herbalist, grind, macerate and press a concoction of herbs to create a healthy herbal tonic. Sample the slightly bitter drink and learn more about its healing properties.

Following this insightful morning tour, return to the hotel in time for lunch.

Overland travel is not advised during the two weeks from 3-Apr-24 to 18-Apr-24 and 23-Mar-25 to 07-Apr-25. Service availability during that time may be limited, tour guides may be traveling home, and restaurants may be closed.
