Yogyakarta's urban planning was designed and built in 1755 by Mangkubumi, the first Sultan of Yogyakarta, on the basis of the philosophy of “Sangkan Paraning Dumadi”, a lesson and reminder of the purpose of human life in the world, starting from the beginning of its creation until after death.

The philosophy was manifested in material symbols in the form of a lookout building for deer hunting, a monument, as well as the sultan's palace, even certain plants along the road and trees in the park, all of which were positioned in the spatial plan, which was made in such a way that it resembles a life journey. All of these buildings are now historical landmarks.
