Begin the day at Kampung Laweyan, a historic district dating back to the 16th-century Pajang Kingdom and one of the oldest batik hubs in Indonesia. Enclosed by high walls originally built for security and privacy, its narrow, grid-patterned alleys showcase an eclectic architectural blend of Javanese, European, Chinese and Art Deco influences, reflecting the prosperity of the merchant community that once lived there.

Continue to a batik museum curated by the founder of Danar Hadi Batik, a pioneer in preserving the art form. Housing a wide collection ranging from historic Mataram Kingdom pieces to modern creations, the museum features Indische-style architecture.

Next, visit Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro, a traditional market in Solo inaugurated in 1930. Built to optimise trading conditions, the layout incorporates wide corridors, an ornate entrance and massive louvred windows. This traditional market offers a wide variety of delicious local specialties that are well worth trying.

Departing the market, travel toward Ceto Temple in Karanganyar Regency near Solo, stopping along the way to enjoy lunch surrounded by the lush Kemuning tea plantation.

Erected in Central Java during the late 15th-century Majapahit era, Ceto Temple features megalithic stepped terraces serving as a site for spiritual purification and averting misfortune.

Head back to the hotel in the late afternoon. (L)
