Indonesia has some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet and gathers a wide variety of coral species. Grab a good opportunity to understand the different types of coral species existing in symbiosis and today’s challenges for marine ecosystems from a marine biologist. Get insights into the pioneering work of conservationists in coral building artificial reefs and planting resilient coral cultures.
Be greeted at the lagoon of Candidasa by an expatriate marine biologist at a coral farm, producing corals both for the aquarium industry as well as for reef restoration projects. Get an introduction into coral species and their symbiosis and the challenges their ecosystems face due to global warming and marine pollution. There will also be a video presentation.
Then, move out onto the ocean and walk across the submerged coral farm to see the plantations. There is a marked path with underwater information signage. Try to cut a piece of coral and transplant it to a new section of the artificial reef and help to cultivate the ocean floor.
There is an opportunity for snorkelling to see other various artificial reef sections with beautiful coral. Continue to Candidasa where a set menu lunch is served at a local restaurant right by the ocean. (L)
