Embark on a culinary discovery tour on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. Head to the historic neighbourhood of Kota Gede and get on an old Dutch-style bicycle for a ride through the atmospheric streets of the old town. Get a glimpse of local life while pedalling through the neighbourhood to reach the main market.

Hop off the bikes and go inside to explore this traditional market which has been in operation since the 1700s. Rub elbows with the locals while exploring the stalls. Learn about the different spices and fresh produce used in Indonesian cooking and gain a better understanding of the country’s market culture.

Return to the bikes and ride to a local house for a hands on cooking class. Join the host family to prepare the day’s ingredients, using traditional techniques and a variety of herbs to create fragrant sauces and dips. Then cook a selection of authentic dishes using recipes handed down from generation to generation. While cooking, the hosts will share their family stories and explain what life is like in this part of Yogyakarta.

Once ready, sit down to a delicious, home cooked lunch with the family. After this memorable interactive culinary tour, return to Yogyakarta in the afternoon with a deeper connection with local culture and a satisfied stomach. (L)

- During the important religious festival of Idul Fitri, which falls on 10-Apr-24 until 11-Apr-24, intense travel across the country, especially in Java, has to be expected with the consequence of long traffic jams. Overland travel is not advised during the two weeks from 03-Apr-24 to 18-Apr-24. Service availability during that time may be limited, tour guides may be travelling home, and restaurants may be closed.
