Bugisan by Oxcart & Prambanan Sunset - Full Day
Embark on a full day excursion of Java’s lesser known temples and traditional villages.
Start with a drive to Plaosan, a collection of rarely visited temples that date back to the mid 9th century. Explore the grounds with the guide, learning about the Buddhist and Hindu religions and their role in Javanese society.
From here, continue by ox cart and ride to a nearby village. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside while this traditional carriage slowly makes its way to the village. Be welcomed into the village by friendly hosts. Get an introduction to their daily life while enjoying a refreshing drink and light snacks.
After this first glimpse of village life, it is time to take a closer look. Enter a local home to see the production of a popular traditional snack, emping, then return to the ox cart for a trip to a small music studio. Get a short introduction to Javanese music and a lesson on how to play the gamelan, one of Indonesia’s most beloved instruments.
It’s then on to a jamu maker, a lady who makes traditional herbal drinks. Discover the secret recipes of this popular beverage and sample a glass of the freshly made juice. Having tantalized the taste buds at the jamu house, head to another village dwelling for a delicious home-cooked meal.
This afternoon the tour focuses on temples, starting with a visit to UNESCO listed Prambanan. Explore these 9th century temples, learning about the symbolism of the monuments from the local guide and stopping to admire the three inner shrines dedicated to the Hindu trinity.
The continue to nearby Ratu Boko, an enormous archeological complex that receives far fewer tourists than Prambanan. Take a walk around to see the main highlights then find a scenic spot to watch as the setting sun casts magical colours around the site.
The day tour comes to a close with a visit to Abhayagiri Restaurant for a sunset drink with stunning views over Prambanan with Mt Merapi as backdrop. Then enjoy a traditional Indonesian dinner before returning to the hotel for a good night’s sleep.
