Take a short but insightful tour of heritage filled Yogyakarta. Start with an early morning visit to the Sultan’s Palace, a veritable living museum of culture. Then continue to sacred Taman Sari water palace and the informative Sonobudoyo Museum before concluding with a visit to the UNESCO-heritage Prambanan temples
Upon landing at the Yogyakarta Airport early this morning, meet with a local guide and set off for a full Yogyakarta day tour of the city’s highlights.
Start with a visit to the Sultan’s Palace, also known as Kraton, for an introduction to Java’s remarkable heritage. Explore the building, which is still used as the residence of the Sultan, and learn how its architectural style reflects the traditions of Javanese cosmology. Then step inside to see the incredible collection of cultural relics such as puppets and other handicrafts.
Continue on foot to Taman Sari, a royal complex dating back more than 200 years. Learn about the Sultan who built this leafy compound and hear how it was used by his harem.
The next visit on this cultural discovery tour of Yogyakarta is the Sonobudoyo Museum (Note: Museum is closed on Mondays). Founded in 1935 and designed by the Dutch architect Kersten, this museum offers visitors a chance to see traditional wooden puppets, masks, textiles and an extensive variety of keris, or indigenous daggers.
Around midday, transfer out of town to the UNESCO Heritage Prambanan temples. Along the way stop for lunch, Then tour Prambanan’s collection of 9th century temples. The guide will explain the symbolism and history of the jagged temples and their inner shrines.
Afterwards, returning to the Yogyakarta airport for the onward flight. (L)

- During the important religious festival of Idul Fitri, which falls on 10-Apr-24 to 11-Apr-24, intense travel across the country, especially in Java, has to be expected with the consequence of long traffic jams. Overland travel is not advised during the two weeks from 03-Apr-24 until 18-Apr-24. Service availability during that time may be limited, tour guides may be travelling home, and restaurants may be closed.
