Leave Siem Reap at 07:00 and drive  through the scenic Cambodian countryside to the ancient city of Banteay Chhmar, one of the three largest temple complexes built by the Khmers of Angkor.

After arriving around 10:00 am, visit the satellite temple of Ta Prohm. This charming temple features a small shrine capped with the four faces of the Buddha typically found on temples of the great King Jayavarman VII. Continue to the main temple complex, which was built in honour of the King’s son, a trusted general who died defending the Khmer empire from the Champa kingdom. The temple is largely in ruins but captivates with unique carvings unseen elsewhere in Cambodia, a unique multi-armed Avalokiteśvara carved on the western gallery wall. All nestled amidst a peaceful forest waiting to be explored at your own pace.

Enjoying lunch at the community-based tourism centre.

Then drive around to Samnang temple to the rear of the main complex and then visit a local silk weaving centre. Before departing back to Siem Reap, visit Banteay Torp, whose precariously balanced stones appear as giant towers. (L)
