Set off on this unique Phnom Penh architecture tour alongside a local architecture expert. Spend the morning focusing on buildings that reflect the recent history of the country. The selected structures were built in the 1950s and 60s, a time of cultural enlightenment and political growth in Cambodia. Many of these structures were abandoned during the turbulent Pol Pot regime. The guide will explain how this tragic era of Cambodian history affected the buildings, many of which were repurposed or damaged.

Stop for lunch and dine in the restored 19th-century headquarters of Messageries Fluviales de Cochinchine, the River Shipping Company of Cochinchina: Khéma La Poste offers a charming dining experience within the heart of the old French Quarter. From here it is a short trip to the French Quarter. Travel by pedal-powered Cyclo through these leafy, tree-lined streets. The slower pace of the Cyclo allows for a better examination of the historic, charming buildings in this area.

The trishaws will drop at the jetty where a riverboat awaits. Gain yet another perspective on architecture in Phnom Penh with a cruise along the riverside. The blend of old and new perfectly captures the current state of Cambodia- a country where daily life appears modern on the surface but is rooted in ancient beliefs and customs. Then return to the hotel. (L)
