Wild Saudi Arabia

Get up close and discover Saudi Arabia's unique, exotic wildlife

DESERTS & LANDSCAPES FULL OF LIFE

Saudi Arabia has many tricks up its sleeve to surprise and delight visitors. One of the ways it does this is through its unique and exotic wildlife. Far more than just a desolate expanse of sand and dessert, Saudi Arabia boasts more than 82,000 sq. km. of nature reserves and preservation areas rich with life. From the mountains of Abha, to the desert sands of Al Ula and the depths of the Red Sea, let’s explore some of the unique creatures found in Saudi Arabia.

Desert wildlife in Saudi Arabia

Nestled amongst the striking red rocks and desert sands of Al Ula in Northwest Saudi is the 1,500 sq. km. Sharaan Nature Reserve. Most visitors will get the chance to see Ostrich, Nubian Ibex and Idmi Gazelles grazing on the rough desert undergrowth, but the Arabian Wolf is a more elusive resident. Sharaan hope that one day the Arabian leopard will join the wolf in roaming the rocky desert terrain…

And, of course, no trip to the desert is complete without time spent with the desert’s most famous creature: camels! Dromedary Camels are the national animal of Saudi Arabia and have played a significant part in the country’s landscape and culture for thousands of years.

Mountain wildlife

In the temperate highlands of Abha in Saudi’s Southwest corner, you will find the juniper forests and jagged peaks of Aseer National Park. The 1,600 sq. km. park is home to more than 300 species of animals and birds, including the Griffon Vulture, the Caracal Lynx and Hamadrya Baboon

Aseer was Saudi’s first ever National Park and the country’s tallest mountain, Jebel Soudah, is also found here. A cable car to the peak is one of the best ways to take in the scope of this stunning wild landscape.

Ocean wildlife

As well as land safaris, did you know that Saudi Arabia has some of the best diving and snorkelling in the World? The Red Sea off the coast of Jeddah has some of the most pristine and active coral reefs in the World and no trip to Saudi would be complete without dipping beneath the surface.  Marine life in Saudi Arabia is rich in diversity, from tiny clownfish to giant bull sharks and 5 of 7 species of turtle. Both the World’s fastest fish, the Black Marlin, and the World’s largest fish, the Whale Shark, can be found in the glittering waters of Saudi’s Red Sea.

With average sea temperatures of 20 degrees, diving and snorkelling in Saudi Arabia can be enjoyed year-round.

We’d love to help you plan your trip to the wild places of Saudi and to get up close and personal with the creatures who call it home. Get in touch to learn more about tours to Al Ula, Abha and the Red Sea.
