5 Ways to Spend the Day in Singapore

Explore the highlights and hidden wonders of this unique island nation

With the recent announcement that Singapore will fully open for travel, the time has finally come to plan that amazing city escape you’ve been dreaming of.

While Singapore may be small in size, it’s huge on possibilities for amazing day trips. With its futuristic architecture, fascinating history, unique ethnic diversity, delicious food and tropical vibes, there is something amazing for every traveller and every occasion.

Here are some ideas to get the wheels turning!

1 - EXPLORE MARINA BAY

There is perhaps nowhere in Singapore more iconic than Marina Bay, which has become one of the world’s most instantly recognizable cityscapes. Within just a short walking distance around the bay, one can enjoy a multitude of attractions and irresistible ‘selfie spots’.

To name a few, there is Marina Bay Sands, the 3-tower structure with what appears to be a “boat” on top of it that has a number of unique attractions itself including the country’s most iconic infinity pool at the Marina Bay Sands Skypark Observation Deck, an ArtScience Museum, a casino and shopping mall -enough to fill the space of an entire day easily!

Just next-door there is the incredible Gardens by the Bay which comprises of 101 hectares of land converted into waterfront gardens including futuristic “Supertrees”, a conservatory with thousands of plant species arranged around earth’s biome’s and the world’s largest indoor waterfall.

To cross over to the other side of the bay, visitors pass through the incredible Double Helix Bridge, a unique pedestrian bridge that dazzles at night and is a frequent centrepoint of photos.

If these things are not enough, within close proximity there is also the iconic Merlion statue, a statue in honour of Sir Thomas Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore, numerous museums, exhibition spaces and much more.

2 - DIVE INTO HISTORY

Although Singapore is more well known as a futuristic city-state, it has a fascinating story to tell for those willing to listen!

Learn all about the country’s unlikely rise from sleepy fishing village to global economic powerhouse while visiting a number of fascinating museums and historical sites.

From the National Museum of Singapore to Fort Siloso, the Asian Civilisations Museum and more, take a journey through the country’s history.

3 - LEARN ABOUT SINGAPORE'S CULTURE

If ever there was a place in Asia that most accurately exemplified the term ‘melting pot’, it’s Singapore. Singapore is so multi-cultural that it has not one, not two, not three but four official languages: English, Malay, Tamil and Mandarin Chinese.

Each of these languages represents a distinct ethnic group whose influence can be found aplenty while wandering the charming streets and boulevards of Singapore.

With a visit to China Town, Little India, and Kampong Glam, which are charming ethnic enclaves within close proximity to each other, guests can quickly get a feel for how each group complements the other to form the basis of Singapore’s unique “different, but one” cultural identity.

4 - GO ON A FOODIE ADVENTURE

What do you get when you have a cultural melting pot in a small, tropical location: huge flavours! By now you may be gaining an understanding that, while Singapore may be small geographically, it is big in many ways, and ‘big on food’ it most certainly is.

Whether it’s multi-Michilen starred restaurants like world-famous Odette, Zén or Les Amis, or any number of unforgettable ‘Hawker Centres’ dotting the country, anyone with even a modest interest in good food will be in heaven in Singapore.

Some of our favourite hawker centres include: Maxwell Food Centre, Newton Food Centre, Old Airport Road Food Centre and Tiong Bahru Food Centre.

5 - GO WILD!

Also known as the ‘Garden City’, one of the things that makes Singapore so unique is its tropical setting. It’s so tropical, in fact, that it’s one of only two cities on earth to have its own tropical rainforest.

A jaunt through Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve affords guests an opportunity to see wild river otters. A trip to Pulau Ubin allows them to spot monitor lizards, monkeys, wild boar and even tiny mouse deer. While hikes through Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, MacRitchie Resevoir Park or Chestnut Nature Park allow visitors to experience true jungles and wilderness while being just a stone’s throw away from some of the most efficient public transportation and futuristic skyscrapers in the world -amazing!

For family affairs or more ‘guaranteed’ animal sightings, Singapore also hosts two of Asia’s most incredible animal exhibits in the Singapore Zoo and River Safari spaces.
