Be a Local, Hop on a Songthaew and don’t forget to Ring that Bell at your Destination

You come to Thailand and Laos and would like to integrate yourself with the local culture. Great.

You come to Thailand and Laos and would like to integrate yourself with the local culture. Great. That’s the spirit! It can all start with how you travel. Hop on the back of a songthaew and let’s get going!

The songthaew is an adapted pickup or small truck used as a share taxi. There are two sets of benches on either side of the rear for passengers to sit on, thus garnering the name songthaew (which means two rows). A roof covers the seats, protecting you and others from the elements (namely the sun and rain). Be warned, they can be jam packed with people during morning and evening rush hour.

So where do the songthaews go? Much like a bus, they follow a fixed route. And how to call one? Much like a taxi, just wave your hand, tell the driver where you will get off and if it is along the way (after agreeing to a fare, of course), just hop on. You can help the driver a bit by pressing the alarm bell at your destination before you get off. Why? Well, imagine if you were a driver responsible to take hundreds of people to their destinations each day. Can you remember all of them?

There are also songthaews that run between cities and towns. These will usually have a fixed price and are non-negotiable. Prices are a little high, so this is a disadvantage if someone was traveling alone, but if in a group, the fee can be shared between everybody, making it an ideal mode of transportation for a big group.

Don’t be surprised to see tons of similarities between Thailand and Laos. And with that in mind, each presents you with its own unique cultures, sights and experiences that is sure to leave a lasting impression on you. Come and experience both countries firsthand (with another similar yet vastly unique country Cambodia thrown in the mix) with Exotissimo’s Colorful Capitals tour. Some of the most amazing cities in the region will be visited, from the bustle of Bangkok, the laid back temple charm of Luang Prabang and the grand ruins at Siem Reap. You will be fascinated!
