The Red Sea: Saudi Arabia’s emerging luxury beach destination

Indulgent hotels, world class beaches, sustainability and more

Home to over 90 pristine islands, Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea region is emerging as one of the world’s premier beach destinations.

Although Saudi Arabia is more often associated with desert landscapes, the country is home to a surprisingly diverse terrain. Along with sweeping desert dunes, Saudi Arabia boasts rugged mountains, green oases and dormant volcanoes. But it is the Red Sea region that is perhaps the biggest surprise for travellers, an enchanting combination of inland and marine wonders.

Thanks to a well-organised development strategy with sustainability at the forefront, the Red Sea is making waves in the luxury travel world. Sandor Leinward recte Rein, EXO Saudi Arabia GM, explains, ‘For me, the islands in the Red Sea are just the next one in a row of Saudi Arabia’s surprises. The moniker ‘Maldives in the Red Sea’ is indeed correct’.

EXO recommends combining a cultural journey similar to our Luxury Adventure in Saudi Arabia or our Surprising Saudi journey with a 3-4 night Red Sea extension for a balanced holiday of discovery and relaxation.

Everything is developed in a sustainable way, from electric vehicles and boats used for transfers to solar power generated operations to coral replanting projects

Sustainability at the forefront

The Red Sea forms Saudi Arabia’s western border, a long stretch of coastline punctuated by cosmopolitan Jeddah at the centre.  Although the sea, idyllic islands and inland dunes have long been popular with local travellers it is only in recent years that formal infrastructure development has commenced.

Thankfully, this development is being carefully rolled out with a growth plan that puts sustainability at the forefront

‘Everything is developed in a sustainable way, from electric vehicles and boats used for transfers to solar power generated operations to coral replanting projects that our guests can participate in’. Sandor explains.

Furthermore, only 1% of the region is allowed to be developed, leaving 99% in its pristine, natural state and single use plastics are completely banned. This forward-thinking approach to development is aimed at keeping the Red Sea’s ecosystems thriving and beautiful for future generations to enjoy.

While relaxing on the beach is certainly an option, Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea area presents an exciting array of experiences at sea.

Activities on the water:

Mangrove kayaking: Kayak through the Red Sea’s crystal clear tributaries, where mangroves play an important role in the region’s ecosystem and present opportunities to see bird nesting, feeding and roosting sites.

Snorkelling and Scuba Diving: The Red Sea is home to a spectacular reef system, a diverse array of marine life and an impressive 18th century shipwreck. Snorkelling and Scuba excursions are operated in compliance with international safety standards.

Sailing: The Red Sea region has partnered with The Ocean Race, a premier around-the-world sailing competition, to bring sailing opportunities to visitors. Guests not only get to enjoy the thrill of sailing but also help raise awareness about the challenges facing oceans globally.

Other watersports: Stand-up Paddle and Kitesurfing are also available

A spectacular backdrop of dunes, mountains and sea provides ample opportunity for unique inland excursions

Activities on land

The Red Sea’s inland region features dark red, rocky mountains standing alongside endless sand dunes with azure sea in the distance. This spectacular backdrop is home to two luxury resorts, setting the stage for guests to indulge in both land and sea excursions.

Hiking adventures: The dramatic desert landscapes present unique opportunities for hiking amid sand dunes and granite monoliths. A variety of trails and experiences, such as sunrise dune hiking, are on offer.

Stargazing and full moon hikes: Take a closer look at the night sky with a local astronomer. Aside from viewing a spectacular star-filled sky, learn about the relationship between the sky and life on earth.

Desert biking:  Hop on a fat tire or regular bike to explore-  a fun way to appreciate the vastness and beauty of the desert landscapes.

Culture: From cooking classes to archaeology trails, there is plenty more to discover inland at the Red Sea.

‘Stunning design-rich properties are now opening one by one’

The spectacular destination has attracted the world’s leading luxury hotel brands. Six Senses, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Rosewood are just a few of the name brands with existing or planned properties in the pipeline.

‘Stunning design-rich properties  are now opening one by one’, remarks Sandor. Here’s a taste of some of the incredible island properties opening their doors in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea:

Six Senses Southern Dunes is one of two inland locations that, together with coastal and marine initiatives, form The Red Sea Development Project. The resort is conveniently located just 45 minutes by road from both the Red Sea International Airport and from the water.

Each of the 36 rooms and 40 pool villas boast terraces with expansive views of the dramatic landscapes. The room’s interior design reflects the tones and textures of the desert with accents inspired by Bedouin heritage.

Nujuma, a Ritz Carlton Reserve property, boasts a mix of villas and residences each of which is immaculately designed to embrace the surrounding natural environment.

In addition to its prime beachfront location, Nujuma boasts an impressive spa complete with yoga pavilion, lap pool and hammam.  Dining focuses on fresh, local seafood but also boasts a mix of international cuisines and pastries.

EXO recommends a minimum three-night stay to relax and enjoy a variety of water and land based activities.

Planning a visit:

Weather: The Red Sea region is a year-round destination, thanks to an average daily temperature of 32C and arid desert weather.

Length of Stay: EXO recommends a minimum three-night stay on the islands to relax, enjoy the resort facilities and beach as well as also allowing time for water-based activities, such as those mentioned above. Alternatively, guests can stay inland at Six Senses Southern Dunes for a similar length of time and enjoy the ultimate combination of land and sea experiences.

What to pack: Modest dress (knees and shoulders covered) is expected when travelling through Saudi Arabia. Generally speaking, at beaches and pools visitors are to remain covered both in and out of the water. However, the rules in the Red Sea islands are expected to be relaxed which will allow guests to wear bathing suits and bikinis.

Getting There: The nearest airport to the islands is Red Sea International Airport, located 15 km inland. The airport has regularly scheduled flights from Al Ula, Riyadh and Jeddah as well as several regional international airports. From the airport, guests can travel  20 minutes by car to Shura Island followed by a 30-60 minute boat trip, depending on the resort location. Alternatively guests can charter a seaplane and fly directly from Red Sea airport to their hotel in under 30 minutes.

EXO Insider Tip: EXO recommends wrapping up sightseeing in AlUla before travelling overland (4 hours) to the coast and catching a return flight from Red Sea International Airport to connect to Riyadh for onward travels.
