Malaysia: A season by season travel guide

EXO's insight on where to go when and recommendations for beating the crowds

While the weather remains relatively stable throughout the year, understanding the nuances of Malaysia’s seasons can help optimise a journey.

Malaysia enjoys a classic equatorial climate, marked by constant warm temperatures (averaging 24°C to 32°C or 75°F to 90°F) and plentiful rainfall.

Encompassing the southern Malay Peninsula on mainland Southeast Asia and the northwest part of Borneo, Malaysia offers diverse terrains from lush rainforests and pristine beaches to cool highlands and bustling cities, ensuring there’s always perfect weather somewhere for everyone, all year round.

One of the greatest advantages of visiting Malaysia is the flexibility it offers beach lovers. The east and west coasts experience their wettest periods at different times of the year, meaning there is always a sunny stretch of beach to relax on after a Malaysia holiday.

When discussing weather and seasonality in Malaysia, EXO divides the country into three main geographical areas, each experiencing slightly different climatic patterns:

  • Peninsula West Coast and Islands: Includes Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca and Langkawi and other western locations
  • Peninsula East Coast and islands: Kelantan, Terengganu, Tioman and Perhentian islands and other east coast places
  • Malaysian Borneo: Sarawak (Kuching, Gunung Mulu, Miri ) and Sabah (Kota Kinabalu, Mt Kinabalu, Sandakan, Danum Valley)

Read on to learn more about the variations in Malaysia’s seasons and EXO’s recommendations for where to go at each time of year.

March to May: Spring adventures

From March to May, the spring season, Malaysia is marked by warm, humid weather with occasional showers. During this season, the monsoons transition from the northeast to southwest monsoon so rains are common but rarely enough to disrupt a day of travel.

March to May Malaysia weather:

  • Peninsula West Coast and Islands:  Generally hot and humid. Moderate rainfall with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, which start to taper off by May.
  • Peninsula East Coast and islands:  Warm temperatures. March can be quite wet but the rains become lighter in April and May.
  • Malaysian Borneo: Warm and humid, with relatively less rainfall compared to other periods although heavy rain storms in March are not unusual.

EXO’s recommendations: Spring is a great time to explore the lush rainforests of Taman Negara and Belum Rainforest. There are far fewer crowds at this time of year compared to July-September, providing visitors with a more intimate connection with nature.

June to August: Peak Season summer

Summer (June to August)  is the peak tourist season, with dry and sunny conditions prevailing throughout the country. With clear skies, it is a wonderful time to visit but with it comes large crowds leading to guide shortages as well as fully booked hotels and services.

June to August weather:

  • Peninsula West Coast and Islands: Consistently warm and dry, with occasional high humidity. An ideal time for touring and beach activities.
  • Peninsula East Coast and islands: Summer is warm and humid on the east coast and the driest time of year with almost no chance of rain.
  • Malaysian Borneo: The summer months are the ideal time for trekking and wildlife exploration. While temperatures rarely top 30C, the humidity remains high. June may have some rain but July and August are typically dry.

EXO’s recommendations:  Penang is a great summer destination, perfect weather for exploring the city’s cuisine and art,  culture and history. For sun-seekers, the east coast islands are a great option: Redang Island for its stunning shores and Sipadan for world-class underwater experiences.  It is also a special time of year to visit Borneo, especially the Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley.  Music lovers will enjoy Kuching’s World Music Festival in June.

September to November: Green season

Often overlooked, the fall months of September to November are a great time to visit peninsular Malaysia. The monsoons bring occasional showers and slightly higher humidity, however temperatures are generally pleasant and peak season crowds have thinned out. Borneo sees increasing rainfall in these months but the pay off is lush landscapes and fewer crowds.

September to November weather:

  • Peninsula West Coast and Islands: Temperature: The weather remains warm  and clouds and rains increase as the season progresses, with November being especially wet.
  • Peninsula East Coast and islands: The east coast has mild fall temperatures, however the Northeast Monsoon approaches in September bringing heavy- but short- rains in October and November.
  • Malaysian Borneo: Increasing rainfall and cloud cover month by month, with November being one of the wettest months, potentially affecting outdoor activities.

EXO’s recommendations:  This is the best time of year to visit the heritage sites of Ipoh, Belum Rainforest and Pangkor Laut island’s magical beaches.  We also recommend adding Taman Negara to a Malaysia holiday during this season, before the rains begin.

December to February:

The end of the year brings rain throughout most of Malaysia, however Langkawi stays surprisingly pleasant and by early February most of Peninsula Malaysia is seeing clearer skies.

December to February weather:

  • Peninsula West Coast and Islands: Warm and humid, with heavy rainfalls in December.  The rains decrease in January, with fewer storms, and by mid to late February skies are predominately clear and sunny. It’s worth noting that Langkawi sees less rain than other west coast areas, making it a decent beach option throughout this season.
  • Peninsula East Coast and islands:  The east coast is best avoided during December and January due to heavy rains and potential for severe weather conditions. However by February it starts to improve, with short rains & calmer seas.
  • Malaysian Borneo: December starts off vibrant and damp with regular afternoon thunderstorms but by January and February the rains are heavy, resulting in very wet conditions for adventure. Some forest and jungle lodges close until the rain subsides in March.

EXO’s recommendations:  These months are ideal for exploring Peninsula west coast, including Penang, and Langkawi for island adventures and beach time.
