TREETOP LIVING – CHIANG MAI (3 Days / 2 Nights)
The fertile countryside surrounding Chiang Mai is full of possibilities for exploration. A medley of mist-shrouded, jungle clad mountains that pour down to lush river valleys; the area is paradise for nature lovers. From the northern capital, it is a short 80-minute drive to Rabeang Pasak Tree House, one of the region’s true gems. Set high in the forest, the accommodation offers guests precious peace and the chance to be at one with their surroundings. It is all about taking things at a relaxed pace here, or exploring the nearby trails and visiting local villages on foot or by bike.
HOI AN BY VESPA (Half Day)
Arguably Vietnam’s most evocative destination, the ancient port of Hoi An rarely fails to seduce visitors. Yet, while the pagodas, merchant houses, and riverside restaurants of the town itself are undoubtedly entrancing, just as special is the flourishing surrounding countryside. An assortment of emerald rice paddies criss-crossed by waterways, Hoi An’s hinterland is ripe for exploration. One of the best ways to do so is by way of another of Vietnam’s icons – a vintage Vespa scooter. After saddling up after breakfast in Hoi An, the tour proceeds by bike and ferry to Cam Kim Island to snack on local delicacies and cruise leisurely through sleepy villages.
CHAMPAGNE BREAKFAST AND SUNRISE OVER ANGKOR (Half Day)
The ancient ruins of the Khmer Empire near the city of Siem Reap are one of the wonders of the world. And witnessing the dawn break behind Angkor Wat – the largest religious building in the world – has become a rite of passage for the millions of visitors that journey to the site each year. It is an amazing experience, and not to be missed, but it is far from a solitary pursuit. This half day experience whisks guests away from the dawn crowds to the picturesque Srah Srong lake for a champagne picnic breakfast overlooking the water – a luxurious and peaceful conclusion to a perfect Angkorian morning.
BUGISAN BY OX CART AND PRAMBANAN SUNSET WITH DINNER (Full Day)
Thanks to its booming and dynamic economy, Indonesia is modernising quickly. Despite its tech-savvy population and growing sophistication, old traditions die hard, especially in the country’s rural heartlands. This excursion offers guests a unique sampler of the rhythms of the Central Java countryside, from observing the daily activities of the people to playing gamelan. Uncovering the rarely visited Plaosan temples and taking a step back in time with an ox cart ride to a local village will satisfy even the most journeyed of visitors, and a sumptuous Indonesian dinner awaits overlooking the spectacular UNESCO listed temple of Prambanan.
VANG VIENG ESCAPE (3 Days / 2 Nights)
Once known chiefly for its raucous backpacker scene, the pretty town of Vang Vieng is now coming into its own as a haven for rest and recreation. In addition to the traveller, families and other tourists are using the Nam Song River that flows through the town for kayaking and boat trips. Meanwhile, the gorgeous surroundings of the town, dotted with limestone karsts, are witnessing increasing traffic from mountain bikers, motorbike riders, rock climbers and spelunkers. It is low-key and wholesome stuff for a town whose raucousness was a thing of dubious legend. This 3-day tour exposes guests to the area’s full array of attractions.
MANDALAY NIGHTS BY MOTORBIKE (Evening Tour)
One of Asia’s most evocative cities, Mandalay is ripe for exploration on two wheels. Best experienced once the steamy heat of the day has somewhat abated, this rip-roaring evening sees guests take to motorbikes to zip around the colourful streets of the city. The adventure starts with an early-evening visit to a lively local market before a refuelling at a legendary venue for crispy duck. A lively exploration of Chinatown ensues before observing a unique comedy performance by Burmese comics the Mustache Brothers. The night ends at one of the city’s best beers stations where unplugged music and plentiful liquid refreshment is available.
CHARACTER BENTO MAKING IN KYOTO (Half Day)
Japan is a country where the classical often rubs along closely with the quirky, and Bento boxes have been a tradition for centuries, providing often painstakingly prepared lunchtime sustenance for millions of Japanese. More recently, there has been the growth in popularity of “kyaraben” or “Character bento”. These playful lunchboxes contain delicacies that are decorated to look like cartoon characters, icons and often famous people. This crash course in the art takes place in one of Kyoto’s many machiya (traditional Japanese wooden house). Guided by an expert in the art of kyaraben, the finer points of food preparation are explored before sampling the fruits of the day’s efforts.
