Arguably Vietnam’s most evocative destination, the ancient port of Hoi An rarely fails to seduce visitors. Yet, while the pagodas, merchant houses, and riverside restaurants of the town itself are undoubtedly entrancing, just as special is the flourishing surrounding countryside. An assortment of emerald rice paddies criss-crossed by waterways, Hoi An’s hinterland is ripe for exploration. One of the best ways to do so is by way of another of Vietnam’s icons – a vintage Vespa scooter. CHARACTER BENTO MAKING IN KYOTO (Half Day)

Japan is a country where the classical often rubs along closely with the quirky, and Bento boxes have been a tradition for centuries, providing often painstakingly prepared lunchtime sustenance for millions of Japanese. More recently, there has been the growth in popularity of “kyaraben” or “Character bento”. These playful lunchboxes contain delicacies that are decorated to look like cartoon characters, icons and often famous people. This crash course in the art takes place in one of Kyoto’s many machiya (traditional Japanese wooden house). Guided by an expert in the art of kyaraben, the finer points of food preparation are explored before sampling the fruits of the day’s efforts.
