The Story Behind EXO Create: A Conversation with Dan Tilley

Inside the thinking behind EXO’s digital platform for building quotations and itineraries.

Following a comprehensive development phase, EXO Create launched in mid-2023, marking an important milestone for EXO Travel and the continued evolution of our digital capabilities.

To better understand the thinking behind the platform, we spoke with Dan Tilley, Lead Customer Success Manager within EXO Travel’s Digital Team. Dan has been closely involved in EXO Create’s journey from its earliest stages through to its launch and ongoing expansion.

For Dan, the story of EXO Create is closely tied to his own time at EXO.

Building the foundations

EXO Create’s origins go back more than a decade, when EXO Travel began expanding its digital capabilities to better support partners. Dan Tilley joined the company in 2012, working closely with agents integrating their systems with EXO through XML connectivity.

 

In those early years we were really starting to embrace technology and see the enormous benefits it could bring to our partners‘, he explains.

 

Through that work, one challenge became clear: building complex itineraries and multi-service quotations could be time-consuming, even for experienced advisors.

 

Our partners needed a faster way to create accurate, multi-service quotations‘, Dan says. ‘But we also didn’t want to lose the depth of expertise and service that define EXO‘.

 

The goal was not simply to introduce automation, but to create a platform that allows advisors to move quickly while still benefiting from EXO’s destination knowledge, product range and operational support.

Listening to what partners really want

We learned very quickly that agents don’t want to be left alone to fend for themselves‘, Dan says. ‘They want collaboration‘.

 

While self-service tools are helpful for building itineraries quickly, many advisors still want reassurance that expert support is available when needed, particularly for complex or high-value journeys.

 

That feedback shaped how we approached EXO Create’, Dan explains. ‘Collaboration with our Travel Consultant teams remains a core part of the platform’.

 

After months of development and testing, the moment that truly confirmed the platform’s potential soon followed.

 

Getting the first confirmed booking through the platform was a really memorable moment‘, he recalls. ‘Seeing our user base expand and watching partners gain confidence using the platform has been incredibly rewarding’.

Advice for partners starting with EXO Create

For advisors considering using the platform, Dan encourages a simple approach: explore it.

 

Don’t be afraid to play around with EXO Create and get a feel for it’, he says. ‘Build as many test quotations as you need across different destinations‘.

 

And when it comes to making that first booking, partners still have the reassurance of EXO’s support network.

 

In EXO Create you can always submit a booking for review by our Travel Consultant teams before finalising it’, Dan explains. ‘And just like any other EXO booking, you still have the full support of our destination specialists‘.

What comes next for EXO Create?

Looking ahead, EXO Create will continue evolving in response to partner needs.

Our focus is on making the platform faster, smarter and more intuitive while expanding the inventory so partners can access even more of EXO’s products’, Dan said.

New destinations will also continue to be added as the platform grows, with Egypt successfully launched this week. The Digital Team is also exploring ways to integrate artificial intelligence into the platform, with features designed to make itinerary creation even more efficient.

We’ve fully embraced AI within the team’, Dan says. ‘You can expect some very useful AI-powered tools in the near future’.
