Insight into Vietnam's regional weather patterns and where to go when

Vietnam’s coastline and varying terrain create different seasonal weather patterns, offering diverse experiences throughout the year.

To highlight the nuances in discussing weather and seasonality in Vietnam, EXO divides the country into three main geographical areas, each experiencing different climatic patterns:

  • North Vietnam: Hanoi, Halong and Lan Ha Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh
  • Central Vietnam: Hue, Danang, Hoi An, Phong Nha, Quy Nhon
  • Southern Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Con Dao, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang

The north experiences four distinct seasons, with temperatures ranging from freezing to tropical heat. In contrast, the south has a more stable climate with milder temperatures and a distinct wet season. Central Vietnam sees moderate temperatures with a pronounced wet and dry season, occasionally impacted by typhoons.

Read on for a detailed breakdown of the weather variations and what to expect throughout the year.

September – November
Autumn brings cooler temperatures and more stable weather conditions in the north, where it is often considered the best time to visit. In the South, October and November bring rain showers but still a great time to visit while central Vietnam is prone to heavy rains and the occasional typhoon at this time of year.

  • North Vietnam: Cool, dry and comfortable, with average temperatures of 20-25°C with colder temperatures in the mountainous areas.
  • Central Vietnam: Rainy season, particularly in cities like Hue and Hoi An, with some risk of typhoons. Temperatures are warm around 25-30°C.
  • Southern Vietnam: After a dry September, the region- especially Cam Ranh and Nha Trang- experiences a short rainy season in October and November brings light showers but rarely enough to disrupt a day of sightseeing; high humidity and temperatures around 28-32°C.

EXO Recommends:
This is a great time of year for the northern regions Pu Luong, Mai Chau, Sapa and Ha Giang. For those seeking harvest season, September is golden rice season in the lower northern mountain

December – February

Winter in Vietnam can vary dramatically between regions, from the freezing temperatures in the northern mountains to the warm and dry south. For travellers, it’s a great time to experience the diverse landscapes of Vietnam. Note that Vietnam’s lunar new year festival, Tet, often falls during January or February.

  • North Vietnam: Coool to cold, especially in mountainous areas like Sapa and Ha Giang where temperatures can drop to freezing with snowfall and frost some years, while Hanoi hovers around 15-20°C.
  • Central Vietnam: Rain are less frequent however do expect the occasional shower and overcast days. Temperatures are cooler but comfortable at 20-25°C, ideal for visits and outdoor activities, although seas can be rough and not suitable for swimming
  • Southern Vietnam: Warm and dry, with temperatures around 25-30°C, offering ideal conditions for both urban exploration and beach breaks.

EXO Recommends:
This is a great time of year to visit the lush Mekong Delta region in the south by day trip or overnight cruise. It’s also the prime season for beach destinations of Phu Quoc, Con Dao and Mui Ne.

 March – May

Spring in Vietnam is one of the most pleasant times to visit, with mild to hot temperatures from north to south.  Rains are rare, offering a perfect time to explore the country’s diverse landscapes.

  • North Vietnam: Cool and fresh, especially in the mountains like Sapa, with temperatures rising to a mild 20-25°C.
  • Central Vietnam: Warm, sunny days begin to settle in, with temperatures hovering around 25-30°C, particularly pleasant in areas like Hoi An and Da Nang.
  • Southern Vietnam: Hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 30-35°C, making it wonderful for beach activities in places like Phu Quoc and Con Dao.

EXO Recommends: We LOVE springtime and early summer in Central Vietnam, particularly March and April where the seas are clear and fresh and the rice fields are spectacular. We also love Pu Luong where the rice terraces early summer and the skies are blue.

June-August

Summer is the hottest season in Vietnam, accompanied by higher humidity and occasional heavy – and refreshing- rains, especially in the north and south. Coastal regions often enjoy cooling sea breezes, perfect for unwinding after cultural exploration.

  • North Vietnam: Hot and humid, with occasional heavy rains. Daytime temperatures often rise above 30°C, especially in Hanoi, but cool off in the evenings.
  • Central Vietnam: Sunny with occasional storms. Beaches like those around Hoi An and Nha Trang offer a refreshing escape as day time temperatures heat up to 30-35°C.
  • Southern Vietnam: The rainy season is in full swing, bringing short but frequent afternoon downpours. Temperatures remain high around 30-33°C.

EXO Recommends:  Sapa is stunning mid-summer, making it the best time to visit. Although the skies are typically clear, do expect the occasional thunderstorm, it’s Southeast Asia after all! We also love this time of year in the Mekong Delta as the hot months of March – May are met with fresh rains at the start of the green season which are not as heavy as later in the season.
