Cycling deep into the untouched countryside where no car can go allow you to wonder the real beauty of Irrawaddy Delta covered with numerous rivers, villages and endless paddy fields also called country’s barn. Experience a wealth of wildlife and mangrove forests of Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary on this 4-day discovery as well.   

Itinerary

📍 Transfer from Dala to starting point: 30 minutes Cycling distance up to: 72 km Difficulty: Medium

Today meet our guide in the morning at your hotel, get briefing about the whole tour. After that you will be transferred to the jetty. Take a local ferry boat to cross the Yangon River and into the small town of Dala. The ferry that crosses the Yangon River is used every day by thousands of local commuters going to and from work.

The scenery quickly changes once you cross the river, from the busy streets of Yangon to the quiet countryside of Dala. We’ll visit a tea shop to experience a daily staple of life in Myanmar and taste the Burmese typical breakfast. Then we will transfer for 30 minutes to avoid the main road and start our cycling on a small country road.

We will ride through the fields, stream, bamboo forest and several villages with a stop at the snake temple filled with Burmese Pythons. You will definitely see no tourists today and it’s the real off the beaten track. We will not see our support car during the first 40 km. After 45 km, we will reach Dedaye, a small river town stands as a gateway to Irrawaddy Delta, and stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, continue cycling to our destination town Pyapon. This afternoon route takes us along the flat road with little traffic and some ride will be off road through the villages standing along the creek. 

Upon reaching Pyapon, check-in your small motel and go out for dinner at a town’s famous beer station.

📍 Transfer by boat from Bogalay to Mein Ma Hla Island: 4 hours Cycling distance up to: 50 km Difficulty: Medium

Our destination for cycling today is Bogalay, a small town there is the launching point for boats to Meinmahla Island.

Our journey begins with a 20 km cycling on paved road before very scenic off road ride. It will be the highlight of this trip offering the real experience of countryside in delta where no tourists go. The shady village trails, plenty of wooden bridges, masses of creek muddled up, a series of villages along the creek and its peoples will show you what rural Burma is all about.

The single trail of villages along the side of creeks will bring you to the river. En route you will have plenty of opportunities to stop and interact with friendly locals who will be looking up in surprise. After exciting 17 km loop, you will get to the main road and continue for the rest 13 km as a final leg.

Upon arrival at Bogalay, say goodbye to your bikes and have lunch at a local restaurant. Your Ranger and local boat are waiting for your second adventure trip (4 hours) to the wildlife reserve.

Arrive afternoon to Byone Hmwe Kyun and check-in your basic guesthouse but charm.

Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Reserve, which translates as Pretty Lady Island, is an wild, uninhabited paradise populated by crocodiles, Irrawaddy Dolphins (November – February), eagles, kingfisher and other extraordinary flora and fauna. The reserve is operated by the Environmental Conservation and Forestry Department.

This morning set off, along with our ranger, by boat to explore the mangrove nursery where there is an opportunity to spot crocodiles, birds and other wildlife.  We will paddle or motor through the mudflats where crocodiles lay their nest, and birds call home. The boat ride offers great views of the waterways as well as a chance to see variety of mangrove. We will also go to dolphin site to check our luck to see Irrawaddy Dolphins.    

In the evening head out for exciting crocodile night spotting.  Crocodiles, which rest just above water level, can be spotted using torches which reflect off their eyes.

Early this morning return to Bogalay by boat. Enjoy scenic 4 hours drive and have lunch at a local restaurant in Bogalay upon arrival. From Bogalay transfer by car (approx. 4 hours) to Yangon by thinking your unforgettable experiences in Irrawaddy Delta.
