Thailand Cultural Immersion - Half Day
Be picked up at 09:00 with a drive in a VIP van to Alex Kerr’s studio at Sukhumvit Soi 16, conveniently located in one of Bangkok’s central business districts (near Asoke Skytrain Station). The studio is spacious and nicely decorated with a collection of East Asian antiques.
After an orientation of the arts, change into Thai style pants called ‘Jongkrabane’ before embarking on two special Thai art classes, Thai Etiquette and Thai Design.
Thai Etiquette (Marayaat): Learn how to move and act within Thai society. Study the proper way of doing the ‘wai’ (Thai greeting), how to sit, stand and greet an elder or a monk. Also, learn how to give and receive gifts.
Thai Design (Lai Thai): Learn how to draw by starting on a few basic designs such as the flower patterns found in temples eaves and the lion emblem on the Thai beer Singha. After practicing, receive a brocade-bound book which contains the final design to draw the final design. First, they outline the design in pencil, then trace the pattern in natural glue, and finally gently lay gold leaf over the glue, leaving the final design in gold. This is the traditional way that artisans created Thai designs. Take the brocade-bound book home as souvenir.
Lunch at the studio before being transferred back to the hotel. (L)
