Doi Tung and The Golden Triangle (Town) - Full Day
You will be picked up at 08:30. Take a day out from classic sightseeing to see a more authentic side of Thailand. Travel from Chiang Rai to Doi Tung, a region set high in the mountains at 2000 metres above sea level.
Learn about the Doi Tung Development Project which was set up to help eradicate the cultivation of opium by encouraging farmers to use more sustainable agricultural practices. Continue with a visit to Mae Fah Luang Gardens and explore the beautifully landscaped gardens. The site was built by the Princess Mother who wished to create a European-style flower garden so that Thai’s could experience a taste of western beauty without having to leave their own country.
Nearby is Doi Tung Temple, a hilltop temple built in the year 911. Witness local worshipers coming to this serene temple to make donations and earn merit- a testament to the deeply spiritual traditions of Thailand.
Next, pop in to the Royal Handicraft Centre which, like the Development Project, aims at creating additional income streams for farming families whilst also preserving traditional Thai crafts. Browse the wonderful collection of hand-made mulberry paper, pottery and weaving on display and learn about the incredible techniques used to create them.
Following a break for lunch, travel down to the lowlands and on to Mae Sai. Mae Sai is a bustling trade town located at the Thai-Myanmar border. Explore the main market, perhaps meeting with vendors or shoppers from Myanmar. Continue a short distance to the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. Learn about the area’s infamous past, when it was at the centre of Asia’s opium trade.
The final stop of today’s adventure is Chiang Saen, the site of a former Thai Kingdom. Explore the sleepy riverside town and its magnificent ancient ruins.
After the day’s adventure in the Golden Triangle region, return to Chiang Rai late this afternoon. (L)
