Set off for an incredible morning tour of Mandalay, getting away from the tourist trail and experiencing an authentic slice of Myanmar life. Travel to 86th Street for a Mandalay walking tour focused around the country’s jade and gems trade.
Explore the shops and stalls, seeing the bustling activity of the city as it comes to life. Thanks to its geographic position near the crossroads of India and China, Mandalay is a flourishing trade town and signs of this will be found at every turn.
Continue to the Mandalay jade market where locally mined white, yellow and green jade is traded. See the stones in various stages of production, from blocks of uncut stones to beautifully crafted jade jewellery. Watch as skilled craftsmen cut and polish the stones on wet saws and merchants haggle over prices.
Having built up an appetite from haggling with jade merchants, transfer to a nearby tea shop for a local lunch. Surrounded by locals, and perhaps some vendors from the jade market, enjoy sweet tea, snacks and curries before returning to the hotel. (L)
